Everyday skills
What time is it?
Learn to read analog and digital clocks. Move the hands, compare the two clocks and try it yourself.
Start with whole hours, then halves, quarters and minutes. Begin with the explanations or choose a familiar setting in the game.
Theory
The short hand shows the hour
A clock face has numbers from 1 to 12. The short, thick hand shows the hour. When the long hand points to 12, it is an exact hour: three o'clock, six o'clock…
Choose a hand, then tap the clock face. You can also drag or use the buttons and arrow keys.
Tap 4:00. The short hand moves to 4; the long hand stays at 12. After 12:00 comes 1:00 again — the circle repeats.
The long hand counts minutes
One small tick to the next is one minute. There are five minutes between the large numbers. A full turn is 60 minutes: one hour.
Choose a hand, then tap the clock face. You can also drag or use the buttons and arrow keys.
Try 3:55, then Forward. You get 4:00. The short hand moves too: at 3:30 it is halfway between 3 and 4.
Half hours and quarter hours
A quarter turn takes 15 minutes. Half a turn takes 30 minutes. Three quarters take 45 minutes: there are 15 minutes left before the next hour.
Choose a hand, then tap the clock face. You can also drag or use the buttons and arrow keys.
3:15 is quarter past three. 3:30 is half past three. 3:45 is quarter to four. Watch both hands, not just the long one.
Digital clocks: hours and minutes
Hours are on the left of the colon; minutes are on the right. 08:05 means eight hours and five minutes. The zero keeps minutes two digits long.
Choose a hand, then tap the clock face. You can also drag or use the buttons and arrow keys.
Change the hours or minutes in the boxes. The hands show the same time. After 59 minutes come 00 minutes of the next hour.
Twice around the clock in one day
A day has 24 hours. At 07:30 in the morning and 19:30 in the evening, the hands look the same. Hours 00 to 23, or words such as morning and evening, tell them apart.
Choose a hand, then tap the clock face. You can also drag or use the buttons and arrow keys.
00:00 is midnight, the start of a new day. 12:00 is noon. Clock games without a part of the day use hours 1 to 12; you do not have to guess morning or evening.
Practice
