Addition
Join two parts to make a whole. Connect the objects with an equation.
Explore parts and whole first.
Theory
Join two parts
Join two counters and three counters. There are five altogether: 2 + 3 = 5. Two parts make one whole.
2 + 3 = ?
Add zero
Four and zero make four. Swap the addends: 4 + 0 = 0 + 4 = 4. The pans stay level: = connects equal amounts.
4 + 0 = 4
Add: move right
Numbers on the line go in order: 0, 1, 2, 3… Start at 3. To add 4, take four steps to the right, one at a time. Each arc is one step. The left button undoes a step; Reset takes you back to 3.
3 + 0 = 3
Start: 3Steps: 0 / 4Now: 3
Swap the parts
Swap the two collections. 3 + 2 and 2 + 3 have the same result. The order changes, but there are still five altogether.
3 + 2 = 5
Practice
Change the two parts and see what whole they make. Compare the picture and equation.
2 + 3 = 5

Games
Find the sum or a missing part. A hint can help you connect the parts and whole.
