Parts and fractions
A later step: equal parts of one whole and how to write a chosen fraction.
Try sharing equally and comparing parts of the same whole first.
Theory
The parts must be equal
The strip has four equal parts. Each is one quarter of the whole. Select the parts: zero to four may be shaded, but each quarter keeps the same size.

Two pieces are not always halves
Two unequal pieces are not halves. Change the cut: only two equal parts of one whole are halves.
?
Two unequal pieces. Neither is half of the whole.
What do the two numbers mean?
The bottom number counts all equal parts: always 4 here. The top number counts the selected parts. Select quarters and compare the notation with the strip.

A half and two quarters
Split each half in two. A second whole of the same size shows quarters. The shaded amount stays the same: 1/2 = 2/4.

Practice
Change the numerator and denominator. Compare the written fraction with the shaded part of the strip.
