More, less and equal
Compare two collections: make pairs or inspect the pans.
Try counting objects first if you need to.
Theory
A partner for every counter
Make pairs: one counter from each collection. None are left over, so the amounts are equal. We write 4 = 4.
4 = 4
More weights lower the pan
Compare five and three equal one-unit weights. Swap the sides: the pan with five stays lower. The wide side of the sign faces the larger number.
5 > 3
We can compare zero too
Compare an empty collection with three counters. Swap the sides: the empty collection still has fewer. Zero is less than three: 0 < 3.
0 < 3
Practice
Change the amounts on the pans. Up to 20, each weight is one unit; for larger numbers, read the labelled values.
2 < 3
