Division
A later step: share a whole equally and check every group.
It helps to know equal groups and multiplication.
Theory
Share equally
Deal twelve counters one at a time into three groups in turn. Each will get four: 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Here we find the size of each group.
12 ÷ 3 = ?
Total: 12
Still to distribute: 12

0How many groups?
Take groups of four from twelve counters. There will be three groups: 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Here we find the number of groups. Check the whole: 4 × 3 = 12.
12 ÷ 4 = ?
Total: 12
Still to distribute: 12

No counters to share into three groups: each gets zero. So 0 ÷ 3 = 0. We cannot divide by zero.
0 ÷ 3 = 0
Total: 0
Still to distribute: 0

Practice
Share the objects into equal groups. Here, nothing is left over.
12 ÷ 3 = 4
Total: 12
Groups: 3
