Picture problems
What was there, what changed and what do we need to find? Build the story and its equation.
Theory
Some more arrive
Find the relationship first: what there was, what changed and what there is now. The diagram and equation describe the same story.
Children are playing at the playground. Before: 4. Arrivals: 3. Now: 7. Match the story, diagram and equation.
4 + 3 = 7
Some leave
The items taken out belonged to the starting group. Remove them and count what is left. The remaining and removed parts together restore the starting group.
A pencil box. Before: 7. Taken out: 3. Left: 4. Match the story, diagram and equation.
7 − 3 = 4
How many more
In a comparison, nothing arrives or leaves: both groups exist at once. The difference completes the smaller group to match the larger.
Blocks: Sam has 4, Alex has 7. Alex has 3 more. Match the story, diagram and equation.
Smaller group + difference = larger group. Both groups exist at once.
4 + 3 = 7
Practice
Explore the example: perform and reverse the action, then compare diagram and equation.
Children are playing at the playground. Before: 4. Arrivals: 3. Now: 7. Match the story, diagram and equation.
4 + 3 = 7
Games
Find the unknown. A hint helps, and that completion is counted separately.
Children are playing at the playground. Before: ?. Arrivals: 3. Now: 6. Find the unknown.
? + 3 = 6
