Multiplication
A later step: equal groups and a short way to write their sum.
Try adding equal parts first.
Theory
Equal groups
Start with three rows of four: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12, or 4 × 3 = 12. Swap rows and columns. The total stays the same while the grouping changes.
4 × 3 = 12
In each group: 4
Groups: 3
Total: 12
Different groups, same total
Start with four rows of three. Swap rows and columns: 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 both make 12. The first factor counts counters per row; the second counts rows.
3 × 4 = 12
In each group: 3
Groups: 4
Total: 12
Zero groups
Zero rows of four and four rows of zero both have no counters. Swap the factors: 4 × 0 = 0 × 4 = 0.
4 × 0 = 0
In each group: 4
Groups: 0
Total: 0
Practice
Change the number of equal groups and the amount in each. Compare them with multiplication.
2 × 3 = 6
In each group: 2
Groups: 3
Group 1
11Group 2
11Group 3
11Total: 6
